The actions of a police sergeant who fired a Taser stun gun at a man as he walked along Sydney's Oxford Street were ''unlawful and improper'', a magistrate has found.
“I believe where possible that a defendant ought to know that he will no longer be facing criminal charges.'' Mr Alkan is suing NSW Police over the arrest.

Police inquiry into stun gun shooting in city

Senior police have ordered an investigation into the use of a stun gun on a man in Oxford Street three months ago, casting a shadow over the announcement by the Premier, Nathan Rees, that the weapon will be distributed to all frontline police.

His solicitor, Nick Boyden, said the footage, obtained by The Sun-Herald, was inconsistent with the police report. Read full article

Richard John Broeder not guilty of murdering Amanda O'Dell

A man acquitted of murdering his ex-girlfriend will now sue the NSW Police for the 14 months he spent behind bars. Richard John Broeder, 23, walked free from the Supreme Court in Newcastle after being found not guilty of the murder of Kempsey supermarket cashier Amanda O'Dell. The body of Ms O'Dell, 20, was found under tree branches in the Tamban state forest north of Kempsey in May 2006, six weeks after she went missing from her parents' home. No cause of death was ever established...

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service for posting a massacre threat against his old Sydney high school on YouTube. Jason James Cousins, of North Parramatta, was arrested last November, not long after a multiple shooting at a school in Finland. A 30-year-old plumber has been sentenced to 100 hours’ community service for threatening a massacre at his old Sydney high school on video sharing website YouTube. Jason James Cousins pleaded guilty to threatening students at Cambridge Park High School in a video posted under the username ‘kill them all now’ last November, shortly after a high-school massacre in Finland.In the video, Cousins referred to the killer, saying: “I am giving him the centre stage for four more days...Then the cameras will be at Cambridge Park High School in Sydney,” he said. “Those students got what they deserved.” His lawyer, Nick Boyden, told Waverley Local Court that Cousins had acted out of character and did not realise the unfortunate consequences of his actions.
